Meeka is a 6 month old grey kitten that I took in. She was a stray at 8 weeks old with no food and no home, just her brother. A friend and I took the cats in and gave them a home. Meeka is energetic and loves running around, especially if you give her a cat toy.  Even though therapy pets are usually dogs they can vary in animals as long as they are certified and are proven to benefit ones health. I am currently in the process of getting her certified. With my sophomore year being much more stressful I couldn’t of found her at a better time. I was diagnosed with anxiety this past winter and having her with me as helped tremendously. Whenever I have an anxiety attack she knows something is not right and will do anything to help me. Meeka knows when its time to play and when she is needed for comfort. Not only does she help me but my 3 year old brother, Jack. Jack was diagnosed with autism and ever since I brought her home he cant stop smiling. My brother is on the lower end of the spectrum but he will still have his autistic moments. Over break Jack could was having one those moments, Meeka walked up to him and laid with him on the floor. Seeing his smile and hearing him say, “Mandy, the kitty is cuddling me” brought me to tears. Something so little made him happy and to this day he makes sure to tell me when she “cuddles” with him. Something so little can make people relaxed and at ease when their world is overwhelming and stressful and I couldn’t be more thankful to have her.

Why Pet Therapy?

February 19, 2016

A website all about pets helping other people, what could be better? Pet therapy is very helpful when it comes to relieving stress and taking a break from things. Here at PSU we have events where dogs who are certified as therapy animals come in to see the students. Therapy pets also visit nursing homes, hospitals, children, even court rooms and other places where they can benefit someone’s health.  I personally chose pet therapy as my website because I have diagnosed anxiety. I have recently gotten a kitten (picture below) and I know when I am having an anxiety attack she will be there for me. Being on a college campus students are bound to be stressed at some point and with this website I plan to provide an outlet where students can go frequently to relieve that stress and be in a better mood.
